Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and there’s nothing that’s sweeter than chocolate on this special holiday besides…books! I’m very happy to share with you my favorite 10 Valentines Day books that you can read with your preschooler.
Most of these titles are available at your local library or you can use the Amazon links I’ve provided to get your very own copy to keep. Most are even available in Kindle format.

10 Valentine’s Day Books for Preschoolers
Snowy Valentine by David Petersen. This adorable story is about a bunny named Jasper who searches all over the snow for a special Valentine’s Day present for his loved one. What will he find?
There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Rose by Lucille Colandro. Everyone loves this story about the “Little Old Lady” who swallowed something! This book appeals to any age with its rhyming text and hilarious illustrations! Kids will have so much fun guessing what the old lady swallows next!
Valentine Blessings by Mike Berenstain. Brother Bear receives a valentine card from a secret “Valentine Sweetie”, and he doesn’t know what to do. This book teaches Brother Bear an important lesson about love.
Happy Valentine’s Day Curious George by N. Diangelo. George and his friends celebrate Valentine’s Day with decorating, baking, card making and some unexpected hilarity along the way! Just how much mischief can a curious little monkey get into when balloons, frosting, and glitter are involved?
Pete the Cat: Valentines Day is Cool by Kimberly and James Dean. Pete the Cat thinks Valentine’s Day isn’t cool . . . until he realizes how many special cats there are in his life! Pete works hard to make valentines for everyone, and it turns out to be the grooviest Valentine’s Day ever. But what happens when he realizes he’s forgotten to make a card for a very important cat? Join Pete the Cat as he discovers just how special Valentine’s Day can be!
The Day It Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond. This is one of my all-time favorite books, regardless of Valentine’s Day. The author of this book is the illustrator of the “If you Give a Mouse…” series. One day it rains hearts and as Cornelia catches them, she knows just who to give each heart too. All the hearts are different, and she uses them to create different Valentine’s gifts for each of her friends. Your reader will delight in watching Cornelia create her Valentine’s Day cards and see who she gives them too.
Happy Valentine’s Day, Little Critter! by Mercer Mayer. Everyone loves the Little Critters! Little Critter’s class is getting ready to celebrate Valentine’s Day and they’re busy getting everything ready. Little Critter makes a special Valentine for someone…but who? Your little reader will enjoy lifting the flaps on each page to reveal Valentine surprises!
My Valentine For Jesus by Laurie Knowlton. This Valentine book is all about the meaning of love. They rhyming text and bright illustrations are engaging for the reader. This book tells the story of a child’s love for his family, but mostly his special love for Jesus.
The Biggest Valentine Ever by Steven Kroll. Clayton and Desmond decide to make a special Valentine card for their teacher, Mrs. Mousely. But things don’t go as planned. They keep messing up, and finally get into an argument and rip the Valentine card in half. Soon they discover that they can work together and make the biggest Valentine EVER! This book includes stickers for your little one to make their own Valentine cards.
Happy Valentine’s Day, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff. Last, but not least is one of my favorite book characters, Mouse! Be warned, though: this book is NOT like the other Mouse books. This is a board book that doesn’t follow the same storyline as “If you give a Mouse a Cookie”. Mouse celebrates Valentine’s Day in his own way by celebrating his friends for who they really are and what they love.
