Mardi Gras is quickly approaching and is one of my all-time favorite holidays to celebrate. Maybe it’s because I was born and raised in New Orleans (that may just be a small part of it). I love celebrating Mardi Gras with my own students at preschool because it’s a FUN holiday. The colors are so pretty, and who doesn’t love sparkly beads and masks?
A couple of weeks ago I put together some fun and colorful Mardi Gras playdough and it smells delightful, too! It goes without saying that kids LOVE playdough, and this fun Mardi Gras themed playdough is no exception.

SUPPLIES NEEDED
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup salt
1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
2/3 cold water plus 2 Tablespoons
1 teaspoon grape Kool-Aid powder
1 teaspoon lime Kool-Aid powder
1 teaspoon lemonade Kool-Aid powder
Optional – gold glitter
DIRECTIONS
1. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
2. Add the oil and cold water and stir well to incorporate. The oil is what keeps it soft and binds it together.
3. Remove the playdough from the mixing bowl and place it on a flat, lightly floured working surface. Knead for about 4-5 minutes until a soft and elastic dough forms.
4. Divide the dough up into three even parts. Place the dough into 3 separate bowls and set aside.
5. Pour 1 teaspoon of each Kool-Aid packet into 3 separate bowls. Add 2 teaspoons of water to each bowl and stir.
6. Pour the grape Kool-Aid mixture over one of the dough balls and knead until the color is distributed (about 3-4 minutes). If the dough becomes too wet, add 1 Tablespoon of flour and continue to knead until the perfect consistency is achieved.
7. Repeat step 6 using the lemonade and the lemon-lime flavors.
8. Optional – sprinkle with gold glitter.
9. ENJOY!!
*Store in ziplock bags for up to 3 months.

In the “Supplies Needed” list, there is a “3/4 cup” shown. I’m confused about this item. For what purpose is the “3/4 cup” used?
